Driver accused of fatal Hayward pedestrian crash arrested at OAK

( KRON ) — A man was taken into custody at the Oakland International Airport last week in connection to a fatal pedestrian-vehicle collision in Hayward earlier this year, police announced Thursday.

Thirty-six-year-old Kelvin Leovander, who the Hayward Police Department said resides outside of the city, was arrested on April 4 for voluntary manslaughter and felony hit and run resulting in death. Authorities said he is the driver responsible for the traffic collision death of a 26-year-old pedestrian, identified as Lydia Guerra of Hayward.

Hayward PD responded to the crash on Feb. 10 just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Tennyson Road and Calaroga Avenue. Arriving officers found Guerra unresponsive with major injuries. She was transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Leovander was detained at the scene and placed on a mental health hold, authorities said. After release, he was arrested and booked into the Santa Rita Jail. Leovander was then released “pending additional follow-up to the case,” Hayward police said.
