SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Along the Embarcadero, a quiet underwater transformation is making waves. Since summer 2022, 288 custom eco-tiles have been installed at three key San Francisco waterfront sites—Pier 45 Breakwater, the Agricultural Building Seawall, and South Beach Harbor East Breakwater—thanks to the Living Seawall Pilot.
Led by the Tiburon-based Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in partnership with the Port of San Francisco, the initiative aims to turn the seawall into a vibrant marine habitat.
