Spring thunderstorms could spark lightning, hail over Bay Area

After a sunny weekend and Monday in the Bay Area, where temperatures climbed into the upper 60s, cloudy skies moved into the region Tuesday morning, dropping temperatures by 10 degrees.

Wednesday is shaping up to be the bigger wild card, according to the National Weather Service . A sluggish low-pressure system spinning off the Southern California coast is expected to push a wave of moisture into the Bay Area — just enough to spark some atmospheric instability.

In a weather outlook issued Tuesday, the weather service said there’s up to a 20% chance of isolated thunderstorms Wednesday, lasting into the evening, especially across the Central Coast and southern stretches of the South Bay. There’s also a low chance of lightning, small hail and gusty wind…
