California gas prices soar following fire at one of state’s last remaining refineries

BENICIA, Calif. – Bay Area drivers are feeling the pinch at the pump as gas prices spike following a fire Monday at the Valero refinery in Benicia—one of only nine refineries still producing gasoline in California.

According to AAA data, California’s average gas price rose from $4.777 to $4.826 per gallon as of May 8. The Bay Area is seeing the steepest increases: Sonoma County leads with $5.173 per gallon, while Contra Costa and Solano counties remain just under $5.
