Machete-wielding man arrested in San Francisco standoff

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A man who allegedly threatened a victim with a machete Monday morning in San Francisco was arrested after a standoff, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

Police responded at 6:43 a.m. to the Civic Center Residence at 44 McAllister Street on the report of a person with a machete. Arriving officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Jared Spegal. Spegal “refused to comply,” SFPD said, and barricaded himself in his third-floor unit.

A hostage negotiation team, along with the San Francisco Fire Department, responded to assist. According to SFFD, members of Truck 1 were able to remove Spegal, who was taken into custody.

Spegal was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Charges in the incident are pending, police said.
