The once sprawling homeless encampment at Wood Street in West Oakland has transformed substantially, now occupied by the new Prescott Station, an affordable housing development designed to aid in easing the housing crisis in the Bay Area. The development, which opened its doors earlier this week with much fanfare, features 235 apartments catering to households earning up to 80% of the Area’s Median Income, and also includes commercial retail space, reported SF YIMBY.
According to the reports, the construction of the six-story complex was spearheaded by Build Group, which utilized prefabricated units from Harbinger, headquartered in Vallejo. This marks a bright spot in West Oakland, an area that has grappled with homelessness and affordability issues. The new building offers a range of studios, multi-bedroom units, and a slice of stability through affordable living options. According to the same source, facilities include a fitness center, co-working area, lounge, and a rooftop deck. Mayor Barbara Lee and other dignitaries attended the ribbon-cutting event, where she emphasized the development’s balance of honoring cultural heritage and responding to an acute housing need.
