Authorities are investigating the death of a woman days after being detained by police during a family dispute.Brentwood police and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office are leading the investigation into the death of Yolanda Ramirez, who was arrested after a family altercation at about 11 a.m. Sept. 26. During the incident, police said a family member requested that Ramirez be placed under a citizen’s arrest. When officers arrived, police said Ramirez, who was about 70 years old, tried to flee the scene but was detained. After she was secured in a patrol vehicle, officers noticed she appeared to be suffering from a medical issue and immediately called for medical help, police said. Ramirez was released from custody and taken to a local hospital via ambulance. But days later police said they were told Ramirez remained hospitalized, that her condition had worsened and she was not expected to survive.
Because it is a law enforcement-involved death, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office launched an independent investigation into the incident. The Brentwood Police Department said it is fully cooperating and will release body-worn and dash-camera footage in accordance with county policy.
