(KRON) — Bay Area punk rock superstars Green Day have been announced as the opening act for next month’s Super Bowl LX. The iconic three-piece rock group is set to headline the opening ceremony at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Sunday, Feb. 8.
Formed in 1986 in Berkeley, Green Day rose to global superstardom on the back of 1994’s Dookie, a multi-platinum album that launched a string of hits, including “Longview,” “Basket Case” and “Welcome to Paradise.” Led by singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, along with bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool, the East Bay band has become one of the best-selling rock bands of the last 30 years.

The Grammy Award-winning group has also been outspokenly political at times. Green Day’s acclaimed 2004 album, American Idiot, was seen as a critique of the U.S. during the post 9/11 period, the presidency of George W. Bush and the Iraq War. More recently, the band has been openly critical of President Donald Trump.
