Castro Valley BART Station at Risk of Closing

If voters in five counties fail to pass a sales tax increase this November, BART says it will make even deeper service cuts and shut down between 10 and 15 stations, including Castro Valley, starting next year.

BART says it needs to close a projected $376 million deficit for its 2027 fiscal year (July 2026 to June 2027). The transit agency has cited lower ridership and revenue since the 2020 pandemic as major reasons for its shortfalls.

At its annual BART Board Workshop on Thursday, February 12, BART staff is expected to present the Board with detailed plans to keep train service operational if a November 2026 ballot measure fails and BART fails to find another way to make up the rest of its budget…
