75-year-old man convicted of East Palo Alto murders found fit for parole

(KRON) — A 75-year-old man who has been behind bars for the last 50 years for an East Palo Alto double murder was found suitable for release on parole on Thursday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

John Meachum was 25 years old on Nov. 19, 1976, when he fatally shot a suspected drug dealer during a drug-ripoff robbery, the DA’s office said. Meachum then shot and killed the victim’s wife, who witnessed the murder of her husband. Prosecutors said the two murders happened in front of the married couple’s 4-year-old child.

Meachum was also convicted of kidnapping a woman after the murders and “warned her he would kill her if she told police anything,” the DA’s office said…
