PLEASANT HILL, Calif. — A Contra Costa County school has earned the highest distinction in the California Department of Education’s (CDE) Green Ribbon Schools program. Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School in the Moraga School District has been named a “Green Achiever” as part of the 2026 California Green Ribbon Schools Awards, placing it among just five schools and districts statewide to receive this top honor.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recently recognized 26 schools, 12 school districts, and one county office of education as 2026 California Green Ribbon Schools awardees. The honorees were selected for their exceptional commitment to resource conservation, health promotion, and environmental literacy.
“Receiving this distinction reflects the school’s strong environmental stewardship and its thoughtful approach to planning and implementing sustainable practices that are embedded throughout the curriculum and school community,” said Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey. “Congratulations to the school leaders and students who have created a successful and equitable program that truly stands out in our county. Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School’s practices offer a model that schools across Contra Costa County can learn from.”…
