UC Berkeley begins building 23-story dorm that will reshape city’s skyline

Construction has begun on a 23-story student housing tower at UC Berkeley that will that will soon reshape the city’s skyline and add more than 1,600 beds as the campus struggles to keep up with surging housing demand, officials confirmed.

The Bancroft-Fulton Student Housing project, rising at 2200 Bancroft Way near Durant Avenue, will stand 23 stories tall once completed.

At roughly 276 feet, the building is expected to surpass the 185-foot office tower at 2150 Shattuck Ave., according to development reports. It will still be shorter than the university’s landmark Sather Tower.

The project is being developed by UC Berkeley Capital Strategies and built by Clark Construction. Completion is expected by summer 2028, with students moving in for the 2028-29 academic year…
