Three individuals lost their lives after their vehicle collided with an elephant inside Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park, authorities confirmed. The tragic accident occurred Sunday evening, resulting in three fatalities and injuries to four others.

According to the Uganda Police Force, the vehicle involved was carrying seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). The group was traveling from Arua city towards the capital, Kampala, when the crash happened around 8:00 p.m. along Arua Road within the park’s Nwoya District.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Hiace struck a crossing elephant, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Three passengers died instantly at the scene, while the remaining four, including the driver, sustained injuries.

Emergency responders quickly transported the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital before transferring them to Kampala for further treatment. The deceased were taken to Anaka Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.

Car accidents involving wildlife are becoming increasingly frequent in Uganda as human settlements expand closer to protected natural habitats. Authorities emphasize the need for heightened caution when driving through national parks, especially after dark.

The police have issued a reminder urging motorists to strictly observe speed limits and exercise extreme vigilance in wildlife areas to prevent similar tragedies. The Ugandan Wildlife Authority echoed this call, advising drivers to remain alert for animals crossing roads within protected zones.

Images released by police show the damaged vehicle with a dented side door and scratches on its rear, resting in a ditch off the paved road under the cover of night. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of balancing road safety with wildlife conservation in Uganda’s national parks.
