Body camera footage capturing the arrest of a 16-year-old student at a California high school has ignited community outrage, with the teen’s family condemning the officer’s use of force.
The incident occurred last week at Fairfield High School, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, following a series of fights on campus. The video reveals an officer delivering multiple punches to the student, Maurice Williams, while attempting to handcuff him. Fairfield police described these strikes as “distraction strikes” intended to gain compliance.
Williams’ stepmother spoke out during a recent press conference, stating, “No parent or family member should ever have to watch their loved one being treated that way.” The officer involved has not been publicly identified, though some community members have expressed concern over her involvement in prior controversial incidents.
According to police reports, two students were arrested that day for causing disturbances and resisting arrest. Officers also reported finding sharp objects in backpacks seized during the altercations.
The body cam footage shows a male officer first detaining another student and leading him to the school office. Williams then appears on camera resisting arrest before being forcibly taken to the ground. A second officer can be seen and heard shouting orders while striking Williams multiple times.
Adding to the controversy, a woman named Myah Hamilton came forward, recounting a previous encounter with the same female officer. Hamilton alleged that during a traffic stop, the officer pulled her out of her car by her shirt and hair.
Hamilton criticized the officer’s conduct, stating to ABC 7, “She should have never been able to continue to be a police officer. They call you peace officers to bring peace, not to cause more problems.”
The Fairfield Police Department continues to review the incident amid calls from residents for greater accountability and transparency.
