At the 2024 American Music Awards held on May 25 at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand Garden Arena, the night’s biggest artists gathered to celebrate the current music scene. While stars like Teyana Taylor, Teddy Swims, and Riley Green were present, Taylor Swift, despite leading with eight nominations, was notably absent.
Swift, whose latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, is the best-selling record of the year so far, surprisingly did not take home any awards. Industry analyst Chad Teixeira suggests this unexpected outcome signals a “shift” in how Swift is perceived within the music industry.
Speaking to The Mirror, Teixeira called it “interesting” that Swift, a dominant figure in the music world, failed to secure a win at a fan-voted event like the AMAs. However, he cautions against interpreting this as a decline in her career or popularity.
“Taylor Swift operates beyond a simple popularity contest,” Teixeira explained. “She’s an established global brand with immense influence and a loyal fan base. One awards show result doesn’t redefine her status.”
He further noted that fan-voted awards often reflect the current “energy” and excitement around certain artists. After years of widespread visibility, it’s natural for attention to shift slightly, not because fans like Swift any less, but because audience engagement evolves over time.
Teixeira pointed out that Swift’s career has reached a point where she is no longer the underdog fans root for to break through-she’s already at the pinnacle. This can sometimes lead to less urgency in fan voting, as success becomes expected.
Despite the lack of wins at this year’s ceremony and the previous one, Swift remains the most-awarded artist in American Music Awards history with 40 wins. She also holds top honors at the Billboard Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards, and uniquely, she is the only artist to have won the Grammy for Album of the Year four times.
Overall, while the night may have highlighted a shift in public perception, Taylor Swift’s cultural influence and fan loyalty remain as strong as ever.
