At least six people were killed in a mass shooting in Muscatine, Iowa, on Monday afternoon, in what police are describing as a domestic-related incident. The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, died by suicide after a confrontation with officers.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies provided details during a press conference, confirming that officers responding to a call at a home on Park Avenue discovered four victims with gunshot wounds. Additional victims were later found at separate locations: one man was found deceased in a residence on Mill Street, and another was located at Willits Metalworks on Grandview Avenue. All six victims are believed to be family members of McFarland.
Following the initial discovery, McFarland fled the scene but was confronted near the pedestrian bridge on the Riverfront Trail. The encounter ended with McFarland taking his own life. Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities indicated that McFarland had a criminal history, though specifics were not disclosed. The investigation is ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information to contact detectives at 563-263-9922.
The Muscatine Community School District confirmed that two of the victims were students and two were district employees, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic event affecting the McFarland family.

Chief Kies expressed the community’s profound grief, stating, “Today I simply do not have the words. This act of evil and what it has done to our community.”
