A tense standoff is unfolding at a Chase bank in downtown Bakersfield, California, following a reported bomb threat. Authorities say one hostage has been safely released so far, while negotiations with the suspect continue.
The incident began around 1 p.m. Tuesday when an unidentified man entered the bank and barricaded himself inside with an unknown number of people, according to Bakersfield Police Sgt.
Eric Celedon. Crisis negotiators, with assistance from the FBI, have been in contact with the individual by phone.
“We were able to secure the safe release of one hostage,” Sgt. Celedon confirmed, adding that those remaining inside are believed to be unharmed. At this time, it remains unclear whether an actual bomb is present.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, are providing support, and multiple units such as SWAT, bomb squad, K9, gang unit, negotiators, and drone teams have been deployed. Nearby buildings have been evacuated as a precaution, with the bank located at Chester Avenue and 17th Street.
Sgt. Celedon described the situation as “very active” and urged the public to avoid the area while authorities work to resolve the crisis safely.
This remains an ongoing situation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
