60 Minutes Anchor Scott Pelley Fired After Clash with New Boss

Additional Coverage:

Veteran CBS journalist Scott Pelley has been dismissed from the iconic news program 60 Minutes following a contentious dispute with the show’s executive producer, Nick Bilton.

In a letter sent to Pelley, Bilton detailed tensions that began early in his tenure, accusing Pelley of “hijacking” a staff meeting in an attempt to undermine him publicly. Bilton emphasized his respect for the legacy of 60 Minutes, describing joining the program as “the honor of my career,” and expressing his commitment to upholding its reputation for investigative journalism and storytelling.

Bilton recounted efforts to build a collaborative relationship, including an early invitation to dinner extended to Pelley, which was declined. He expressed disappointment that, instead of engaging constructively, Pelley chose confrontation. According to Bilton, during a staff meeting, Pelley openly disparaged his qualifications and intentions with what Bilton described as “remarkable incivility and contempt.”

The executive producer stressed his openness to diverse viewpoints and respectful debate but criticized Pelley’s behavior as a public display of hostility that undermined teamwork and progress. Bilton underscored his mission to deliver top-tier news programming rather than become embroiled in internal conflict.

Despite Bilton’s hope to find a way forward, he stated that Pelley’s resistance to collaboration was clear. Consequently, Bilton informed Pelley that CBS News was terminating his employment “for cause” effective immediately.

Scott Pelley joined 60 Minutes in 1999 as a correspondent for its spinoff series, 60 Minutes II, and became a full-time correspondent on the flagship program in 2004. His departure marks a significant shift within the storied news institution as it navigates changes under new leadership.
