A McDonald’s employee in Northern California is currently recovering after an alleged attack involving hot oil from a co-worker.

Jacob Smith, 20, was hospitalized Saturday following the incident at the Yuba City McDonald’s where he works, according to Yuba City police. When officers arrived, Smith was reportedly walking and able to communicate but had visible burns on his face and upper torso.

Authorities identified 23-year-old Jalani Bluett as the suspect who allegedly poured hot oil on Smith before fleeing the scene. Bluett was later located and arrested after midnight on June 1.

He is being held in Sutter County Jail without bail, facing multiple charges including assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem, and serious felony assault causing great bodily injury. His motive remains unclear.

Jacob’s mother, Amber Smith, shared that her son suffered second-degree burns covering 22% of his body and was in severe pain. She described Jacob as a kind-hearted, hardworking young man who would readily help others.

Amber has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical expenses, lost income, and daily living costs during his recovery. As of Friday, the fundraiser had raised nearly $13,000.

In a statement, Amber emphasized the long road ahead for Jacob, noting the extensive medical care and time off work he will need. She highlighted that this unexpected event has significantly disrupted his life at a time when he was focused on building his future and preparing for marriage.

Yuba City police continue to investigate the case as Jacob Smith receives treatment and begins the healing process.
