Woman Wanted in Kidnapping Case Near Home of Missing NBC Hosts Mother

Additional Coverage:

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has identified a suspect following an incident reported on May 29, occurring less than seven miles from the Tucson, Arizona, neighborhood where Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, went missing on February 1.

Authorities have named a woman wanted in connection with alleged kidnapping and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and have urged the public to remain vigilant. Although specific details of the incident have not been disclosed, it took place approximately 6.8 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the suspect’s arrest. This development comes amid reports that Nancy’s disappearance could potentially be treated as a homicide case.

At this time, law enforcement has not indicated any link between this recent incident and Nancy Guthrie’s ongoing case. Nancy vanished from her multi-million-dollar Tucson residence in the early hours of February 1, roughly four months ago.

The night before her disappearance, Nancy spent time with her other daughter, Annie Guthrie, and her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, who dropped her off at home just before 10 p.m. On February 1, her doorbell camera was disconnected at approximately 1:47 a.m., followed by the disconnection of her pacemaker app around 2:28 a.m.

Authorities were alerted to Nancy’s absence around midday when she failed to attend her scheduled virtual church service. Investigators discovered blood droplets on her front porch and noted that her daily medication remained in the home, raising serious concerns about her well-being.

No arrests have been made, and no suspects identified in Nancy’s case to date. However, a significant lead emerged in February when the FBI released footage from Nancy’s doorbell camera showing a masked individual tampering with the device prior to her disappearance.

The person was seen wearing a balaclava, gloves, and a backpack, and was carrying a firearm. Despite this, authorities have not determined the individual’s identity or any connection to the case.

Savannah Guthrie, after taking some time away to assist with the investigation, returned to her role on NBC’s Today show in April. On June 8, she opened up about the emotional challenges of resuming work amid her mother’s unresolved disappearance during an appearance on “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle.” She described the experience as difficult but expressed gratitude for the distraction her work provides and the support of her colleagues.

“It’s really hard to come back,” she said. “I’ve been trying so hard to hold it together, and I promise I will.

I’m happy to be back. It’s like the two hours of my day – it’s not that I’m not thinking about it, because I am – but it’s something to do.

It brings me a lot of joy to be with everybody. But no, it’s not easy.”

Savannah added that continuing with her life and career was something her mother would have wanted. “I just felt like, what else should I do?

And my mom would’ve said the same, like, ‘Honey, just keep going, just keep going.’ And so, I am.”

She concluded by addressing public curiosity about how she manages to work under such circumstances: “No, never. Never forget. Never stop thinking about it.”

The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active, with authorities encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
