Sudanese Migrant Arrested After Brutal Knife Attack Shocks Belfast Neighborhood

Additional Coverage:

Authorities in Northern Ireland are investigating a violent and disturbing incident that occurred Monday evening in Belfast, where a man appeared to attempt to behead another individual on a public street.

Graphic video footage circulated on social media, showing a bloodied man wielding a knife and reportedly stabbing the victim repeatedly in the head and neck. The suspect, believed by police to be a Sudanese migrant in his 30s, was seen pinning down the victim as he struggled to escape.

Local residents intervened to stop the attack, with one person striking the assailant with what looked like a racket, while others helped pull him away from the victim. The chaotic scene was captured on video, accompanied by bystanders shouting warnings and calls to stop the assault.

The victim, a man in his 40s from the local community, sustained serious injuries to his eyes, back, and face. Police have described the attack as a “brutal” attempted murder. Initial reports incorrectly identified the attacker as Somali, a mistake police attributed to the rapid pace of the investigation.

Gavin Robinson, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, confirmed that the suspect had been residing in the UK on a five-year visa and called for swift justice, urging authorities to ensure the suspect’s conviction and deportation following the “barbaric” attack.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the act as “sickening,” affirming that such extreme violence will not be tolerated on British streets.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland continues to probe the motives behind the assault but has stated there is currently no evidence linking the incident to terrorism. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages and reassured the public that their safety remains a top priority.

In response to community concerns, Henderson appealed for any demonstrations to remain peaceful and assured that police presence in the area would be increased to maintain order. He acknowledged the wide range of emotions the event has stirred and encouraged residents to communicate any worries to authorities.

Local reactions have been one of shock and fear. Described by some as “something out of a horror movie,” witnesses expressed disbelief at the severity of the attack.

One resident recounted feeling “absolutely petrified” after hearing the screams, which drew children to the scene. The distress also affected some onlookers, with at least one woman requiring medical attention due to the trauma of witnessing the event, according to council member Paul McCusker.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to bring clarity and justice to this harrowing episode that has unsettled the Belfast community.
