What I Learned from Using Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass for 10 Trips in a Month
Malia Yoshioka shares her firsthand experience with Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass, which offers 10 train segments for $499 within 30 days. Having traveled across 11 states by rail, she highlights important tips and insights for those considering this pass.
Maximize Value with Longer Trips
The pass counts each boarding and disembarking as one segment, regardless of distance. This means short hops and multi-day journeys both use one segment each.
To get the most bang for your buck, booking longer, direct routes is key. Transfers double the segment count, so minimizing those helps you stretch your 10 rides further.
Since long coach trips booked individually can cost hundreds of dollars, just a few long rides may cover the pass’s price.
Sleeper-Car Upgrades Are Not Available
A notable limitation is that the USA Rail Pass only covers coach seating-upgrades to sleeper cars or private rooms aren’t allowed. Amtrak’s coach seats are generally comfortable, reclining with decent legroom, but they don’t lie flat. For multiple long-distance trips, Malia suggests breaking up travel with hotel stays to rest more comfortably.
Bring Your Own Snacks to Save Money
Unlike passengers in roomettes or sleeper cars, coach travelers with the pass don’t get dining-car meals included. While café cars offer a limited menu, it’s often more economical to pack your own non-perishable snacks. Malia recommends items like powdered soups, oatmeal, and tea, noting staff may provide hot water but won’t refrigerate or reheat your food.
Pack Light but Keep Essentials Handy
Amtrak allows two carry-ons plus a personal item per passenger. To move efficiently during boarding and disembarking, packing light is advised. Malia also carries a smaller bag inside her main carry-on with travel essentials: extra layers, neck pillow, light blanket, earplugs, eye mask, headphones, and hygiene products.
WiFi Can Be Spotty – Prepare to Disconnect
WiFi service is often unreliable on long-distance routes, and cell coverage can be patchy. To avoid frustration, download movies, books, or maps ahead of time. Malia embraces the opportunity to unplug, enjoying journaling, sketching, or simply watching the landscape.
The Sightseer Lounge Offers Stunning Views
Trains equipped with a Sightseer Lounge provide panoramic windows and comfortable seating, making them Malia’s favorite spot. From golden fields to mountain vistas and colorful rivers, these lounges showcase some of the best scenic moments rail travel has to offer.
Malia’s experience underscores both the great value and some practical considerations when using Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass. For travelers eager to explore by train, especially on longer routes, the pass is a smart choice-just plan ahead for comfort and convenience.
