A volunteer search team in Mexico has released unsettling photos of what is believed to be a mass grave, discovered amid the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC Today co-host Savannah Guthrie.
The group, Buscando Corazones Nogales, has been following an anonymous tip about a possible burial site linked to Nancy’s disappearance. Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, leader of the missing-persons organization, revealed that on June 10, they received information pointing to a potential grave connected to the case.
This lead sparked a thorough search near the Arizona-Mexico border, according to an interview Ortiz gave to the Mexican outlet El Imparcial. However, authorities have yet to confirm any connection between the suspected grave and Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, leaving the link uncertain as investigations continue.
Volunteer teams, who have been combing remote areas in the region for weeks, took the initiative to probe this new tip. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos commented during a briefing that search crews were conducting an extensive sweep of the surrounding terrain. He also noted that homicide investigators became involved after conditions at a nearby house raised further concerns.
Despite the grim discoveries in the area, including the suspected mass grave, the search for Nancy remains active but challenging. Savannah Guthrie has spoken openly on television about her mother’s disappearance, often tearfully sharing how she still cries every morning over the unresolved case.
Buscando Corazones Nogales focused part of their search on the Mariposa area, where Nancy is rumored to have been buried in an unmarked grave. To date, no remains connected to her have been found. Ramona Ortiz confirmed that the group plans to continue their efforts in the days ahead.
The search area is known for its harsh and rugged terrain, with rocky landscapes stretching for miles, complicating efforts to locate any trace of Nancy. Between April and May alone, Ortiz’s organization uncovered over 25 unmarked graves in the Mariposa region, containing the remains of at least 32 individuals.
Nancy Guthrie’s case remains at a standstill with no new evidence or credible witnesses stepping forward, despite ongoing rewards offered by the Guthrie family and the FBI. The search continues with hopes that these recent leads might bring new developments in this heartbreaking case.
