Former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem Faces Backlash Over Geographic Error in Interview

Former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem found herself at the center of criticism this past weekend after making notable geographic errors during a televised interview. Speaking with Newsmax, Noem discussed the Trump administration’s engagement with various countries in the Americas but mistakenly grouped Central American nations as being part of South America.

In the interview, Noem highlighted cooperation on migration and anti-cartel operations, mentioning El Salvador and Costa Rica alongside Ecuador and Argentina as South American partners. While Ecuador and Argentina are indeed South American countries, both El Salvador and Costa Rica are located in Central America-a distinction Noem appeared to overlook.

Social media users were quick to point out the mistake, with many expressing surprise and disappointment that a former Cabinet official would be unfamiliar with such basic geography. Independent journalist Aaron Rupar humorously commented, “El Salvador and Costa Rica, dear reader, are not in South America,” sharing a clip of the interview.

Others reacted more critically, emphasizing the importance of geographic knowledge for someone who held a high-level national security role. One user wrote, “I can’t.

I just can’t. This is the former U.S.

Secretary of Homeland Security and current Special Envoy for Shield of the Americas.” Another compared Noem’s error to a recent gaffe by Vice President JD Vance, who incorrectly stated that every major conflict, including World War II, ended through negotiations-a claim that overlooks the unconditional surrenders that concluded that war.

The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about the public understanding of history and geography among some political figures. As discussions about foreign policy continue, accurate knowledge of international regions remains essential for credible and effective leadership.
