Shania Twain Opens Up About How Menopause Boosted Her Body Confidence
Country superstar Shania Twain, 60, has candidly shared how menopause played a key role in helping her overcome long-standing body-image struggles. In a recent interview with The Times, Twain revealed that during her 2019 Las Vegas residency, she faced intense pressure to maintain a certain physique – to the point where she became malnourished and even suffered two torn thigh muscles.
“In menopause you lose control of your body,” Twain explained. “All of a sudden, I’m bloating and I definitely can’t just lose five pounds.”
This loss of control made Twain uncomfortable with her changing appearance, and she admitted that she stopped looking at herself in the mirror altogether. “I hated my body…
I cannot stand this changing body,” she said.
Driven by insecurity, Twain pushed her body hard with intense workouts and eliminated fats and sugars from her diet, which ultimately worsened her injury. As her recovery dragged on, she began reassessing her approach to health and self-acceptance.
“Now I’m like, bring on the mirrors, I’m going to look at myself all day long!” she said.
“Menopause has been very good for me because I’ve learnt that some things you cannot control.”
Twain has previously spoken about how menopause helped her put insecurities into perspective, encouraging herself and others to embrace self-love despite fears and doubts.
Her reflections echo those of other celebrities navigating menopause. Actress Katherine Heigl recently shared how perimenopause brought unexpected empathy between her and her teenage children, while Gabrielle Union described how the experience initially made her feel diminished but eventually led her to view it as a new beginning rather than an end.
Twain’s openness offers a powerful reminder about the challenges and growth that can come with life’s transitions – and the importance of embracing oneself along the way.
