Authorities discovered the body of a woman floating in the kettle pond at Bowne Park in Flushing, Queens, on Sunday evening, police report.
Shortly after 6 p.m., a witness who came across the scene alerted emergency services. Upon arrival, officers found the woman’s body near a fountain within the pond. Two responders carefully removed her from the water and laid her on the grass, while bystanders looked on in shock.
The body was mostly covered by a white tarp, though a gray, wrinkled foot remained visible. The New York Police Department confirmed that a medical examiner is currently working to determine the cause of death. The woman’s identity has not been disclosed, and the investigation is ongoing.
A local resident who was walking her dog around the time of the discovery described the incident as “unsettling” in what is usually a peaceful neighborhood park.
“I consider this park a safe place,” she said, pointing toward the pond where the body was found. Bowne Park had hosted community activities the previous evening, including a clean-up event and a silent disco.
Incidents involving bodies in New York City waterways are, unfortunately, not rare. For example, earlier this year on May 15, authorities recovered a man’s body from the East River near Brooklyn Bridge Park. Responding to a 911 call around 8:30 a.m., first responders found the man unresponsive about 30 feet from shore and pronounced him dead at the scene.
The emergency response involved FDNY marine units and firefighters, with initial reports placing the individual near Furman Street and Pineapple Street before attention shifted to Pier 5.
As with the recent case in Queens, officials have not yet released further information about the victim’s identity or circumstances. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
