Tropical Storm Arthur Hits Texas Bringing Dangerous Flooding Risks

Additional Coverage:

Tropical Storm Arthur has made landfall in Texas, bringing significant flood risks to the southern United States as it moves inland.

According to AccuWeather, Arthur’s primary threats include heavy rainfall and flash flooding across the Southeast, with the potential for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes through Friday. The storm developed Wednesday over South Texas from a cluster of thunderstorms and clouds that had been gathering over Texas and northern Mexico in recent days. Authorities are anticipating flooding, property damage, and travel disruptions across much of the southern region.

The storm originated from former eastern Pacific Tropical Storm Cristina and a low-pressure wave that moved in from Africa, AccuWeather reports. Alex DaSilva, lead hurricane expert at AccuWeather, noted that Arthur’s center could shift farther off the Gulf Coast by Wednesday evening, potentially extending tropical storm-force winds near the coast due to thunderstorms east of the storm’s center.

While Arthur is expected to weaken as it progresses inland, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed the storm’s status Wednesday afternoon after sustained winds reached 45 mph. A tropical storm warning is currently in effect from Sargent, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana.

Dan DePodwin, AccuWeather’s vice president of forecast operations, emphasized the ongoing flood threat: “A significant flood risk exists each day this week, shifting slowly eastward from Texas into Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia later in the week.” Rainfall totals from South Texas to eastern Alabama are forecasted between 4 to 8 inches, with isolated areas potentially receiving 8 to 12 inches over several days.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Arthur could strengthen again off the Carolina coast if it maintains its structure over the Southeast. Alternatively, the storm’s remnants might evolve into a non-tropical low-pressure system over the Atlantic, which would weaken its intensity.

Residents in affected areas are urged to stay alert and monitor updates as Tropical Storm Arthur continues to impact the southern United States.
