UFC Freedom 250 Falls Short of Dana White’s Super Bowl-Level Viewership Prediction
The recent UFC Freedom 250 event, held on the South Lawn of the White House in celebration of President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, did not come close to meeting UFC President Dana White’s ambitious viewership expectations.
Ahead of the groundbreaking occasion-which featured seven UFC bouts staged outdoors at the White House-White confidently predicted the broadcast would attract “Super Bowl-type numbers.” Speaking to TNT’s Adam Catterall, White described the event as a “very unique experience” for fight fans worldwide, anticipating massive audience engagement.
However, the reality was quite different. Streaming live on Paramount+, the event averaged approximately 8.2 million viewers. By comparison, the Super Bowl LX, aired earlier this year on NBC, drew an audience of nearly 125 million, dwarfing the UFC’s numbers by over 100 million viewers.
According to Variety, the total reach of UFC Freedom 250 was around 17 million, reflecting viewers who tuned in for at least a minute during the broadcast. While respectable, this figure falls short of the historic dominance of the Super Bowl, which claims 19 of the top 20 most-watched telecasts in U.S. history, as reported by Nielsen.
White’s optimism was largely based on the event’s unprecedented setting and timing. Hosting the first-ever sporting event at the White House on the president’s milestone birthday was expected to create a historic spectacle, one that White believed would rank among the company’s most significant nights.
The event opened with a memorable moment as White and President Trump emerged from the Oval Office into the outdoor arena dubbed “The Claw.” The president appeared visibly winded but shared a notable moment with the UFC CEO.
The fights themselves delivered excitement, with all seven bouts ending in stoppages. Notably, Ilia Topuria suffered his first professional defeat in a lightweight title match against Justin Gaethje. Yet, much of the attention shifted toward the behavior and controversies surrounding the event.
After Josh Hokit defeated Derrick Lewis-Trump’s proclaimed favorite fighter-Lewis made a controversial claim during his post-fight interview, asserting that former First Lady Michelle Obama is “a man.” Additionally, UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland, who was not scheduled to fight, was removed from the premises by the Secret Service after allegedly violating a ban on his attendance.
Following the event, White announced that the UFC has no plans to host another White House event, citing the staggering $60 million cost required to stage the production.
While UFC Freedom 250 offered several memorable moments and historic firsts, it ultimately fell short of the monumental viewership and impact Dana White had envisioned.
