A babysitter in Goshen Township, Ohio, has been sentenced to a minimum of three and a half years in prison after severely assaulting her friend’s one-year-old daughter.
Amanda Leigh Greger, 38, was entrusted with caring for Melissa Bilby’s baby overnight while Bilby worked a night shift. However, upon returning home, Bilby found Greger asleep and the infant covered in what appeared to be blood and vomit, according to authorities.
The baby sustained critical injuries, including a brain bleed and bleeding from her right eye. She required intensive care, heavy sedation, and ventilation to aid her recovery. Investigators reported bloodstains throughout the room, and the child’s clothing-confirmed by the mother-was found stained and washed in the laundry.
During the sentencing hearing, Greger remained silent and declined to make any statement on her behalf. The court proceeded to impose the sentence following her guilty plea to one count of felonious assault on May 28.
In response to the tragedy, the baby’s aunt established a GoFundMe campaign to assist the family, describing Greger as a “lifetime friend” who had been trusted to protect the children. The fundraiser shared the grim extent of the infant’s injuries, which included bruised lungs and fluid accumulation around her spine and heart.
This case highlights a broader issue revealed in a recent study by the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, published in The Lancet’s eClinicalMedicine. The research found that approximately one in 20 infants worldwide suffers physical abuse by a caregiver within their first two years, underscoring the urgent need for increased awareness and protection for vulnerable children.
