Police have released an important update regarding the shocking incident at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, where a 3-year-old boy was reportedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure.

The child sustained serious injuries after the attack by at least one crocodile on Thursday. However, as of Monday, officials confirmed that the boy’s condition has improved and he is no longer critical. He remains hospitalized in stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk, who is believed to be unacquainted with the child, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The suspect, reportedly living with learning disabilities and accompanied by caregivers at the zoo, was assessed as unfit for police interview and has since been released on bail until September 18.

The police responded to the emergency around 1:34 p.m. Thursday.

The child was treated at the scene before being rushed to the hospital. The young boy had been visiting the zoo with his family at the time of the incident.

The Johnson family, who run the zoo, played a crucial role in the rescue efforts. Chris Newman, director of the National Center for Reptile Welfare, shared that Tracey Johnson was the first to respond, quickly joined by her husband Andy and their youngest son Edward. “All three were involved in the rescue,” Newman said, describing them as “heroes” and noting how deeply shaken the family remains.

The zoo, home to over 100 animals including lions, tigers, and crocodiles, has confirmed that none of the crocodiles were seized or euthanized following the attack. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this distressing event.
