Savannah Guthrie Returns to “Today” Show After Brief Hiatus
Savannah Guthrie made her return to NBC’s “Today” show on Tuesday, July 14, following a four-day break from the broadcast. The 54-year-old journalist was warmly welcomed back by co-host Craig Melvin, who acknowledged that Guthrie had taken some well-earned time off.
Melvin, 47, expressed his pleasure at seeing Guthrie back in Studio 1A, noting her recent absence. Guthrie shared with viewers that she had spent her break catching up on World Cup matches, surprising Melvin by revealing, “I watched quite a few of them, and you should know, the France and Spain semifinal is today.”
While Guthrie did not elaborate on the reasons behind her short absence, reports indicate that it was unrelated to any developments in the ongoing investigation into her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie. Nancy, 84, was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1, and authorities continue to search for her.
Following her mother’s disappearance, Guthrie took an extended leave from the show, returning in April with an emotional interview alongside Hoda Kotb, who had filled in during her absence. At that time, Guthrie reflected on the difficulty of resuming her role amidst personal hardship, describing the “Today” show as a source of joy and family.
“It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not,” she said. “But I can’t not come back, because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now.”
She added, “I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real.
I will have joy. And my joy will be my protest.
My joy will be my answer. And being there is joyful.
And when it’s not, I’ll say so. And I have been so grateful to have this family.
I consider this my family, my greater family.”
Looking ahead, Guthrie expressed uncertainty but also determination: “And so I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try.”
Savannah Guthrie’s return marks another step in her ongoing journey as she balances her personal challenges with her professional commitments.
