Couple Uses Work Benefits to Skip Waiting and Start IVF at 38

Additional Coverage:

At 38, my husband and I made the deliberate decision to pursue IVF-not out of infertility struggles, but as our chosen path to parenthood. Despite having no known fertility issues, we wanted to avoid the uncertainty and time it might take to conceive naturally. Fortunately, both of our employers offer fertility benefits, which significantly eased the financial aspect of this choice.

Sitting at our kitchen table surrounded by IVF supplies, I felt a mix of confusion and anxiety. The instructions were overwhelming-too many steps, yet not enough clarity.

Standing there, half-dressed with circles drawn on my abdomen marking injection sites, I hesitated just before giving myself the first shot. My husband’s nervous laugh broke the tension, and I found myself on the verge of tears, overwhelmed not only by the procedure but by the hope it represented-a baby.

That night, doubts crept in. I wondered if I could really go through with IVF. But despite the emotional turmoil, we chose this path intentionally.

Why IVF Was Our Choice

We started our family later in life, both focusing on careers in our early 30s before marrying and deciding to have children. By the time we began trying, I was approaching 39. Our decision to pursue IVF was based on three key factors:

  • Healthier Outcomes: As maternal age increases, so do the risks of miscarriage and genetic abnormalities. IVF allows preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A) to screen embryos for chromosomal issues before transfer, reducing these risks.
  • Flexibility for the Future: We might want more than one child. IVF lets us preserve embryos now, so age won’t limit our options later.
  • Financial Support: Thanks to fertility benefits through both of our employers, the cost of IVF was much more manageable-a privilege that made this path feasible.

Our Experience and Outlook

IVF is demanding-emotionally and financially-and the journey can feel like a roller coaster. Although we don’t face infertility diagnoses, my age carries risks that sometimes keep me awake at night. The ability to select healthy embryos lessens the impact of age on our chances.

After one IVF cycle, I produced 34 eggs, resulting in four chromosomally normal embryos. If the first embryo transfer leads to a successful pregnancy, we still have more embryos preserved for future use, effectively removing my age as a limiting factor.

Time, Our Most Valuable Resource

We didn’t rush into parenthood, and we haven’t missed out. In our 30s, we focused on building a strong relationship and making memories. IVF has given us the gift of time-time to grow our family on our terms, with the hope of a healthy pregnancy and beyond.

In the end, IVF helped us reclaim control over our family planning, turning what could have been a stressful race against the clock into a hopeful and deliberate journey.
