Federal authorities have charged 48-year-old Clarence Frazier Jr. with the murder of U.S. Deputy Marshal Drew Hanson, who was fatally shot Monday while serving an arrest warrant in central Louisiana.
The incident occurred at Frazier’s residence in Alexandria, Louisiana, where officers were attempting to apprehend him on a warrant related to his failure to appear in state court on charges of sexual battery involving a person with infirmities. Upon forced entry, law enforcement found Frazier had barricaded himself inside a bedroom and allegedly opened fire, striking Deputy Marshal Hanson.
Hanson succumbed to his injuries around 4:45 p.m. CDT.
A standoff followed, ultimately ending with Frazier’s arrest and custody.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Zachary Keller for the Western District of Louisiana expressed deep sorrow, describing Hanson as “a father, a husband, a son, and a child of God” who “paid the ultimate price in service of our community’s safety.”
If convicted, Frazier faces a potential life sentence in prison.
Deputy Marshal Hanson, 36, joined the U.S. Marshals Service in 2020. His law enforcement career included roles with Customs and Border Protection in Arizona, Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New Orleans, and various police departments in Mississippi.
U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta honored Hanson’s dedication, stating, “The nation lost a hero Monday.
Drew was selflessly devoted to making his community and his nation safer. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
The investigation is ongoing, with the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office and the FBI assisting federal authorities.
