Alec Baldwin Faces Criticism Over Tribute to Late Actor Sam Neill

Alec Baldwin has come under fire for what many are calling a “self-centered” tribute to the late Sam Neill, who passed away on Monday at the age of 78. Baldwin shared a nearly three-minute video on Instagram in honor of Neill, but viewers quickly pointed out that the actor mentioned Neill only briefly at the beginning and end of the clip, sparking backlash on social media.

In the video, Baldwin opened with a quick acknowledgment: “I just wanted to come on here quickly and say how stricken I was to learn of the death of Sam Neill.” He then spent much of the video reflecting on his own experience filming “The Hunt for Red October” in 1989, referencing the cast and his memories from the set. Neill, who played Captain Vasili Borodin in the film, was only mentioned again near the conclusion.

“That is one of the few movies I have ever done where I remember the whole movie,” Baldwin said. “That’s what a fan I am of that work.

Not me. I’m not a fan of my work, but I am a fan of their work.

Anyway, oh my God. My God.

Sam Neill. My love to his family, my love to his family.”

Many followers expressed disappointment with Baldwin’s tribute. Comments included, “I thought you were paying respects to Sam Neill, didn’t realize it was all about you,” and “Not much of a tribute to Sam but just a name mention. Do better Alec.”

However, Baldwin also received support from fans who appreciated the heartfelt and genuine tone of his message. Some praised his calm and compassionate way of speaking, describing his tribute as warm and thoughtful.

Sam Neill’s family announced his passing on Monday in Sydney, Australia, noting the loss was sudden and unexpected but that Neill had remained cancer-free. They described his passing as dignified, reflecting the character he maintained throughout his life.

The actor’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and friends. Nicole Kidman, who starred alongside Neill in the 1989 thriller “Dead Calm,” called him “one of the greats” and shared how he had been a lifelong friend and mentor. Actress Toni Collette, who worked with Neill on “A Long Way Down” and “Dirty Deeds,” remembered him as a kind-hearted gentleman with a sharp wit, sharing heartfelt words and a photo of the two together.

Sam Neill is remembered not only for his impressive career but also for the warmth and generosity he showed to those who knew him.
