San Diego Zoo Expands Its Roster of Rare Animals with New Echidna Arrivals at Safari Park
While pandas remain a major attraction at the renowned San Diego Zoo, visitors now have even more reasons to explore the facilities, including rare species and exciting upgrades. Among the newest additions capturing attention are echidnas-unique “spiny anteaters” that are garnering interest as potential new stars on the cuteness scale, much like the beloved axolotl.
Interestingly, the San Diego Zoo system comprises two locations: the main zoo and the Safari Park in nearby Escondido. It is at the Safari Park where guests can catch a glimpse of these fascinating creatures.
Recently, the Safari Park welcomed a rare birth of twin echidna “puggles.” Typically, echidnas lay only one egg per breeding season, so twins represent an extraordinary and joyful milestone. These ancient monotremes-egg-laying mammals related to the platypus-are considered some of the oldest surviving species on Earth, with origins tracing back to prehistoric times.
However, visitors hoping to see the tiny puggles in person will have to wait a bit longer. One puggle remains under the care of its mother in an underground nursery burrow.
The other required specialized care due to initial weight concerns and is currently receiving expert attention at the Safari Park’s advanced Harter Veterinary Medical Center. Thanks to the dedication of the wildlife care team, the puggle is steadily gaining strength, and their efforts have contributed valuable insights into echidna care.
Beyond these remarkable new arrivals, the Safari Park offers a variety of immersive experiences-from watching the thrilling Cheetah Run to safari-style tours alongside giraffes.
