Varèse Sarabande has announced that Angelo Badalamenti’s celebrated Blue Velvet Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be reissued on September 4, commemorating the film’s 40th anniversary. Fans can pre-order limited-edition vinyl versions, alongside a CD reissue and an expanded 48-track deluxe digital edition.
This release highlights more than just a memorable score-Blue Velvet has only grown in cultural significance since its debut. In 1989, Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers hailed it as the greatest film of the 1980s, describing Lynch’s surreal thriller as “a visionary masterpiece” and “the most influential movie of the Eighties.” Travers noted how the film boldly revealed the dark undercurrents behind the polished surface of Reagan-era America.
The film’s reputation has only strengthened over time. The BBC placed Blue Velvet at number 60 in its list of the 100 Greatest American Films, while the American Film Institute ranked it as the eighth greatest American mystery film. AFI also included it in their 100 Years…100 Thrills list and recognized Dennis Hopper’s unforgettable character Frank Booth as one of cinema’s greatest villains.

The anniversary soundtrack marks the beginning of the legendary creative partnership between Lynch and composer Angelo Badalamenti. Their collaboration started with the haunting track “Mysteries of Love,” sung by Julee Cruise with lyrics by Lynch, and blossomed into an atmospheric score that defined the film’s mood. This partnership continued through iconic projects like Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, and Mulholland Drive, with Badalamenti winning a Grammy for the Twin Peaks theme.
Badalamenti’s score is often cited as his career breakthrough after Lynch invited him to compose for Blue Velvet. Reflecting on their collaboration, Badalamenti recalled how Julee Cruise’s ethereal performance captivated Lynch, leading to the full film score commission.
The upcoming release features the original 14-track soundtrack on both vinyl and CD, while the digital deluxe edition expands to 48 tracks, including alternate cues, previously unreleased material, and additional recordings. Limited-edition vinyl pressings will be available in exclusive colors from select retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Urban Outfitters, Amoeba Records, and independent record stores.
