For countless music lovers, weekends were once synonymous with tuning in to Casey Kasem’s iconic countdown of the nation’s top hits. When American Top 40 first aired on July 4, 1970, it marked a new era in music radio. The very first song to claim the No. 1 spot on the show was Three Dog Night’s energetic hit, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come).”
The program featured the best-selling and most-played songs across North America, drawing its rankings from Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. This made “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” not only the inaugural No. 1 on American Top 40 but also Three Dog Night’s first chart-topping single across all genres.
Penned by renowned singer-songwriter Randy Newman, the song was originally meant for Eric Burdon of The Animals, who released the initial version in 1967. That same year saw P.J. Proby and several others cover the track, but it was Three Dog Night’s spirited rendition that ultimately resonated most with audiences.
In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Newman shared insights into the song’s meaning: it tells the story of a man hesitant about attending a party. The opening lyrics-“Will you have whiskey with your water / Or sugar with your tea”-subtly reference acid, though Newman noted he wasn’t particularly affected by drugs at the time.
While Newman initially wasn’t a fan of Three Dog Night’s version, he reportedly grew to appreciate it. Lead singer Cory Wells recalled Newman jokingly thanking him for “putting his kids through college” after the single reached No. 1.
Released as a single in May 1970 and featured on the band’s third album It Ain’t Easy, the song soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in July, maintaining its position for two weeks.
The original American Top 40 run concluded in 1995, after Shadoe Stevens took over hosting from Kasem in 1988. When the countdown returned in 1998, Kasem resumed hosting duties before passing the torch to Ryan Seacrest in 2004.
The debut episode was broadcast on just seven radio stations nationwide, but the show has since grown into a global phenomenon, airing weekly on hundreds of stations around the world.
As for Three Dog Night’s classic anthem, it remains a staple of their legacy. With nearly 114 million streams on Spotify, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” stands as the band’s second-most-played song after “Joy to the World,” proving its enduring impact well beyond its historic first No. 1 status on American Top 40.
