LOS ANGELES – The iconic Cinerama Dome, a Hollywood landmark that closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to be restored and reopened under new management.
Sony Pictures Entertainment, owner of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, revealed plans to operate both the renowned 86-foot-wide curved dome theater and an adjacent 14-theater complex. The reopening is scheduled for early 2028.
The restoration will maintain the Cinerama Dome’s distinctive geodesic exterior and its famous large logo, preserving the look that has made it a symbol of Hollywood since its debut in 1963. Unlike other Alamo Drafthouse locations, the dome itself will not feature in-theater dining.
“There is no moviegoing destination anywhere in the world that commands the affection, history, and cultural significance of the Cinerama Dome,” said Ravi Ahuja, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Michael Kustermann, CEO of Alamo Drafthouse, added that the dome will serve as the company’s flagship theater on the West Coast.
The dome’s impressive screen supports 70 mm film projection, a format recently gaining renewed attention thanks to Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey.” Originally commissioned by Pacific Theatres founder William R.
Forman in 1963, the venue was designed to showcase movies using three synchronized projectors on its custom curved screen. When it closed in April 2021, it was one of only three theaters worldwide capable of this unique projection.
In addition to the Dome, Alamo Drafthouse will reopen the nearby 14-theater complex formerly operated by ArcLight Cinemas, which also closed in 2021. This complex will include in-theater dining services, distinguishing it from the Dome itself.
The revival of these theaters marks a significant step in bringing back cherished cinematic experiences to Los Angeles audiences.
