- Caitlin Clark creates WNBA ratings tug-of-war as CBS, NBC tout dueling viewership records (foxnews.com)
Caitlin Clark’s impact on WNBA viewership continues to reach new heights, sparking a rare ratings rivalry between major networks. Recently, both CBS Sports and NBC have claimed to have broadcast the most-watched WNBA game of the 2026 season-each featuring Clark and the Indiana Fever.
On July 18, CBS reported that its telecast of the Fever versus New York Liberty averaged 2.579 million viewers, peaking at over 3 million. The network declared this matchup the most-watched WNBA game on any single network this season and the second-highest since 2000.
However, just six days earlier, NBC made a similar announcement. Their broadcast of the July 12 game between the Fever and Las Vegas Aces pulled in an average Total Audience Delivery (TAD) of 2.64 million viewers across NBC and Peacock. NBC touted this figure as the season’s highest for a WNBA game and the second-largest regular-season audience since 2000.
So, which network truly aired the biggest game of the year? The answer depends on how viewership was measured. CBS’s number comes solely from Nielsen’s traditional television data, while NBC’s includes a combined total from both its broadcast channel and streaming platform, Peacock, with digital viewing tracked by Adobe Analytics.
In essence, CBS claims the top spot for the highest single-network audience, whereas NBC leads in combined broadcast-plus-streaming viewership. The difference between the two figures is about 61,000 viewers, or roughly 2.4%, underscoring how close these numbers are despite the different methodologies.
Beyond the competition between networks, these ratings milestones highlight Clark’s growing influence in the WNBA. Over just six days, she helped Indiana generate two audiences exceeding 2.5 million viewers against different opponents on different nights of the week. The July 12 game on a Sunday night averaged 2.64 million viewers and peaked at 2.8 million, while the July 18 Saturday night contest attracted an average of 2.579 million and a peak exceeding 3 million.
Clark’s presence has also helped forge new high-profile rivalries. While her matchups against Angel Reese-led teams have consistently drawn strong ratings, her games against the New York Liberty are now emerging as must-watch events as well.
The Fever’s dominance in WNBA television ratings is striking. Indiana has featured in the 28 highest-rated regular-season games over the past two decades. The first game without the Fever to crack the top tier only appears at 29th place, underscoring the team’s-and Clark’s-enormous appeal.
In fact, no WNBA game between 2009 and 2023 surpassed 1 million viewers, making the Fever’s recent achievements all the more impressive. With Clark continuing to shatter viewership records, the big question now isn’t whether a game will set a new record-but which network will get to claim it.
