Rescue teams continuing their efforts to locate survivors amid the debris of last week’s landslide in Chongqing’s Pengshui County have recovered three more bodies, raising the confirmed death toll to 11, with 50 individuals still unaccounted for, Chinese officials reported Thursday.
Despite ongoing search operations, authorities have found no new signs of life since the initial collapse on Friday, which buried over 10 residential buildings and injured 10 people. Early rescue efforts led to the discovery of eight victims shortly after the disaster.
The recovery process has been extremely difficult due to the sheer volume of debris, including numerous large boulders obstructing access. Responders have deployed heavy machinery, drones, and even used controlled blasting to break down sizable rocks in order to advance the search.
Pengshui County lies in the southeastern part of Chongqing municipality, adjacent to Hubei and Guizhou provinces. The search and rescue mission continues as teams work tirelessly to find survivors and recover those lost in this tragic event.
