Suspect Faces Hate Crime Charges in Upper West Side Double Stabbing
New York City authorities have charged Raul Morales, 51, with multiple offenses including attempted murder as a hate crime following a double stabbing incident on the Upper West Side on Thursday.
The attack left two men injured-Moshe Grunhaus, a 50-year-old Jewish man, and a 57-year-old Asian man-both representing communities united in their call for greater safety measures.
Details of the Charges
Morales is charged with attempted murder and assault as hate crimes in connection with the assault on Grunhaus. For the stabbing of the Asian man, Morales faces attempted murder and assault charges, along with criminal possession of a weapon, although those charges are not classified as hate crimes in that case.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that Morales allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks. After the stabbings, Morales barricaded himself inside a nearby apartment, where investigators later collected evidence including books such as a Che Guevara biography and the Quran.
While Morales has no prior mental health history on record with the NYPD, early inquiries suggest mental health issues may have played a role.
Both victims are currently expected to survive their injuries.
Community Reaction: A Call for Change
Rabbi Yosie Levine of the Jewish Center, who has known Grunhaus for over ten years, expressed his shock and sorrow. He shared that Grunhaus had been praying at the synagogue shortly before the attack occurred just a few hundred feet away.
“I was relieved to see him alert and surrounded by loved ones,” Rabbi Levine said after visiting Grunhaus in the hospital on Friday. He reflected on the rarity of encountering such violence in his two decades as a community rabbi and emphasized the deep impact on the victim’s life.
“This kind of violence is intolerable. It can’t continue,” the rabbi added.
Grunhaus had recently relocated to Florida and was in New York briefly to wrap up affairs when the attack took place.
As the community rallies for healing and safety, authorities continue their investigation into this disturbing incident.
