Rosie O’Donnell Shares How Mounjaro Helped Her Feel Better at 64

At 64, Rosie O’Donnell says she has never felt better-and credits part of her improved health to the medication Mounjaro. The actor and talk show host revealed on the “Good Hang with Amy Poehler” podcast that her doctor initially prescribed Mounjaro three years ago to help control her type 2 diabetes, without mentioning any potential weight loss effects.

O’Donnell recalled a surprising moment at her son’s engagement celebration when she realized she had lost her appetite after taking the medication. “I take the shot, and I go out to Nobu, and I can’t eat anything,” she said, initially attributing it to feeling emotional. However, the unexpected weight loss soon became apparent.

“Two weeks later, I stepped on the scale and had lost 12 pounds without trying,” O’Donnell shared. Concerned something might be wrong, she called her doctor in tears, fearing she might have cancer. Having struggled to lose weight in the past, she found this unintentional loss both surprising and significant.

Mounjaro, which contains tirzepatide, received FDA approval in 2022 for type 2 diabetes treatment and gained approval for chronic weight management under the name Zepbound in 2023. Tirzepatide works by activating receptors for gut hormones that regulate blood sugar and appetite, similar to medications like semaglutide but with an additional hormonal effect.

O’Donnell joins a growing list of celebrities who have spoken openly about their experiences with GLP-1 medications. “Modern Family” star Eric Stonestreet shared how Mounjaro motivated him to adopt a healthier lifestyle by committing to regular exercise.

Tennis legend Serena Williams credited a GLP-1 drug for helping her lose over 31 pounds after struggling with weight loss post-childbirth. Oprah Winfrey expressed regret at not using GLP-1 treatments sooner, reflecting on the years she feels she lost.

As more people explore these medications for diabetes and weight management, stories like O’Donnell’s highlight the potential benefits and unexpected effects of these emerging therapies.
