Mechanical Fault Feared in Greek Helicopter Crash That Killed Newlyweds and Pilot

A tragic helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos has claimed the lives of a recently married British couple and their pilot, with initial reports pointing to a possible mechanical failure.

Marie Ebert, 30, and Alexander Cromie, 31, both from London, died Monday when the private Bell 206 helicopter they were traveling in spiraled out of control and crashed near a landing pad, bursting into flames on impact. The pilot, Giorgos Raikos, 53, a seasoned former air force officer from Greece, also perished in the accident.

Sifnos Deputy Mayor Yiannis Rafeletos shared that many local residents witnessed the crash close to inhabited homes and heard unusual engine noises shortly before the helicopter went down. “So much happiness has turned into sorrow,” Rafeletos remarked.

The couple had hired the helicopter to travel from a village near Athens to Sifnos, a popular tourist destination approximately 120 miles from the capital. The crash ignited a fire on the ground, which has since been extinguished. Rescue teams recovered the victims’ remains, and further testing will determine the exact causes of death.

Greece’s National Organization for the Investigation of Air and Railway Accidents and Transport Safety will lead the official inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, Greece’s civil aviation authority has reportedly grounded Bell 206 helicopters pending the investigation’s outcome.

Professionally, Cromie was a vice president in private wealth solutions at Blackstone, while Ebert was a senior specialist at Bain & Company. Both firms issued statements expressing their shock and condolences.

A Blackstone spokesperson said, “Alex was beloved by everyone who knew and worked with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.”

Bain & Company also extended their support to the families affected by the tragedy.

As the investigation continues, the local community and colleagues mourn the loss of three lives cut short during what should have been a joyful honeymoon journey.
