A 16-year-old boy from Murshidabad district in West Bengal, India, who has been living primarily in ponds due to a mysterious skin condition, is now receiving medical treatment after concerned neighbors raised the alarm.
Iqbal Sheikh has suffered from a burning sensation all over his body whenever he leaves water for more than five years. To alleviate this discomfort, he has spent much of his time submerged in village ponds. His unusual condition gained widespread attention both nationally and internationally, prompting urgent action.
This week, Iqbal was flown to Mumbai’s Sir HN Reliance Hospital for thorough evaluation and care, thanks to funding provided by Indian billionaire Anant Ambani. Medical experts suspect that Iqbal may be suffering from erythromelalgia, a rare disorder characterized by episodes of burning pain, redness, and increased skin temperature. While the condition usually affects the feet, it can cause significant distress and is typically managed with medications such as creams, gels, sprays, or tablets.
Before his transfer to Mumbai, footage circulated online showing Iqbal submerged in a pond eating snacks, as well as images of him in pain at home, wrapped in towels and surrounded by his family. His parents had previously sought treatment at local hospitals but were forced to stop due to financial constraints. At one point, Iqbal even attributed his symptoms to a “djinn,” a supernatural spirit, reflecting the desperation surrounding his plight.
Doctors have expressed concern about the risks associated with his prolonged immersion in water, as continuous exposure can soften and pale the skin, increasing the risk of serious fungal and bacterial infections. Dermatologists warn that this practice, while providing temporary relief, poses significant health dangers.
Iqbal is expected to remain hospitalized as doctors conduct tests and develop an appropriate treatment plan. His family remains hopeful that with proper medical care, he will be able to lead a normal life back at home.
