Before stepping into the spotlight herself, Carole King had already crafted hits for legendary artists like The Shirelles and Aretha Franklin. But with “It’s Too Late,” she took center stage to share a deeply personal story through her own voice.
The song appeared on her iconic 1971 album Tapestry, a record that also gave the world classics such as “You’ve Got a Friend,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” This album would go on to become a defining moment for the singer-songwriter movement of the era.
After relocating from New York to Los Angeles seeking a fresh start, King settled in the Laurel Canyon neighborhood. There, she mingled with fellow music greats like James Taylor and Joni Mitchell, and connected with Toni Stern, who became a key collaborator in her songwriting journey.
“It’s Too Late” was inspired by King’s own life-she had divorced her husband and longtime writing partner, Gerry Goffin, in 1968. Together, they had penned some of pop music’s biggest hits, but this time, King was telling her story directly through her performance.
Recorded at A&M Studios in Los Angeles with producer Lou Adler-founder of Ode Records, the label behind Tapestry-the song features King’s gentle vocals accompanied by piano, guitar, and drums. The arrangement’s understated simplicity perfectly conveys the bittersweet emotions of a relationship ending.
The album cover itself symbolized King’s new chapter, showing her seated in her Laurel Canyon home with her cat, holding a handmade tapestry-a visual metaphor for her personal and artistic rebirth.
Tapestry earned four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, while “It’s Too Late” claimed Record of the Year. The single topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts and achieved Gold status.
Decades later, the song’s impact endured. In 2003, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Additionally, in the early ’90s, British electronic duo Quartz revitalized the track with a cover featuring vocalist Dina Carroll, which reached the UK Top 10, introducing “It’s Too Late” to a new generation of listeners.
