Southwest Airlines is stepping into the airport lounge arena for the first time, announcing plans to open lounges at four major airports in 2027. The new lounges will debut in Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, and Nashville International Airport.
Looking ahead, Southwest anticipates launching at least seven additional lounges over the coming years, signaling a significant expansion of its amenities.
The Dallas-based carrier is collaborating with Chase to create these lounges, and access will be reserved for travelers holding the Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card, also issued by Chase. This credit card, set to launch in 2027, will grant cardholders entry to the exclusive lounges.
This move aligns Southwest with competitors like American and Delta Airlines, which already provide lounge access tied to their own credit card programs. Such partnerships not only generate revenue from card purchases but also foster brand loyalty among travelers.
Southwest has been updating its services to match industry standards, including switching from open boarding zones to assigned seating earlier this year. Additionally, in 2025, the airline ended its longtime policy of free checked bags, introducing fees of $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second.
With these changes, Southwest continues to evolve its customer experience while entering new competitive spaces like airport lounges.
