After 73 years of marriage, a Texas couple’s love story came to a poignant close as they passed away on the same day.
Carol and JoAnn Van Zandt of Mount Vernon shared a bond that lasted more than seven decades, remaining together until the very end. Their family finds solace in knowing neither had to endure life without the other.
According to reports, Carol died early on August 29, with JoAnn following less than 12 hours later. Married since 1953, the couple’s enduring partnership was marked by shared joys-from rodeos and camping trips to golf outings-but most of all, by the simple pleasure of each other’s company.
Their daughter Toni VanZandt reflected on the grace within their passing, saying, “The beauty of their story overshadows any sadness.” She explained that leaving one another behind would have been “excruciatingly painful.” In a touching moment, JoAnn, who had been unresponsive in the hospital, showed emotion for the first time after Carol’s passing, shedding tears that deeply moved their family.
Neighbors also witnessed the couple’s devotion firsthand. Tom Dorman recalled, “She would always have her hand on him; they were very loving. It was just a love story.”
Carol and JoAnn’s legacy includes three children, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren-each generation touched by the couple’s steadfast love.
Their grandson Leonard Heath Ray summed it up simply: “They did everything together.” And as their daughter Tina Dilday said, “Nobody had to grieve the other.” Their story remains a moving testament to a lifetime of shared love and companionship.
