Michael Strahan Reflects on His NFL Retirement Decision
Michael Strahan has opened up about the moment he decided to retire from the NFL, emphasizing that he felt it was simply the right time to step away from professional football.
On June 9, 2008, Strahan announced his retirement after a remarkable 15-year career spent entirely with the New York Giants. The former defensive end made his exit on a high note, just months after playing a key role in the Giants’ stunning 17-14 victory over the previously undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
That Super Bowl remains one of the most memorable upsets in North American sports history. Strahan made his mark in the game with two tackles and a crucial sack on Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, helping to secure the Giants’ unexpected triumph.
Despite the fairy-tale ending, Strahan revealed in a recent interview on The Mac Daddy Show that he would have retired even if the Giants had fallen short. “I kind of felt it,” he said.
“Had we lost, I think because I experienced losing one before and then the next year not even making it, I probably would have said that was it. That was as close as I was just going to get in my career.
And I came back that year not to win the Super Bowl, to be honest with you. I came back that year to have fun.”
Strahan’s career was nothing short of illustrious. Drafted in the second round by the Giants in 1993, he went on to become a seven-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro. His achievements earned him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well as the Giants Ring of Honor.
Since retiring from the field, Strahan has remained connected to football through his role as a longtime analyst on FOX NFL Sunday, alongside Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Curt Menefee. He is also a co-anchor on Good Morning America, juggling a demanding schedule.
During a conversation on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, Strahan candidly discussed how his busy work life has limited his personal time. When asked about his future plans, he laughed and said, “Retirement.”
He elaborated, “I love FOX. I truly love that.
But you work so much, I want to go here, I want to go there, and I can’t do a lot of things because I’ve got these commitments and schedules and stuff. At this point, I have to look at time lived and time left.”
While Strahan has no plans to leave FOX NFL Sunday anytime soon, he is clear that he doesn’t intend to broadcast indefinitely. “I’m not just going to completely disappear,” he said.
“I’ll do FOX until they throw me off of FOX. I don’t want to be 80 years old on Fox, but I’ll stick around a little bit longer.”
