When Pretty Woman hit theaters in 1990, few anticipated that a last-minute addition to its soundtrack would become an enduring hit. While the romantic comedy catapulted Julia Roberts to stardom, its music also left a lasting impression-particularly an energetic track by British duo Go West.
The song, “King of Wishful Thinking,” plays during one of the movie’s quieter moments near the beginning, allowing audiences to really catch every beat. Rather than fading into the background, it captured listeners’ attention, eventually becoming a major radio success and one of Go West’s signature songs.
Interestingly, the track wasn’t initially intended for the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Go West was signed with EMI America, whose label executives viewed the soundtrack as a prime showcase for their roster, which already featured big names like Roxette, Natalie Cole, Robert Palmer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and David Bowie.
In a recent interview, Peter Cox of Go West explained that the label had invested heavily in Robert Palmer’s song “Life in Detail,” but since it didn’t quite fit what they wanted, Go West’s more commercial tune was elevated instead. Cox noted that their song’s placement at the film’s start, over a scene with no dialogue, gave it a unique exposure-letting listeners fully absorb the chorus, a fortunate break for the band.
Reflecting on the film’s unexpected appeal, Cox admitted they didn’t fully grasp why Pretty Woman resonated so strongly, especially with female audiences. Yet its ongoing presence on TV and in popular culture has kept the song alive, introducing it to new generations.
The title “King of Wishful Thinking” itself came from a casual bar conversation, where Richard Drummie referred to the band with that phrase. Before this track, Go West had already achieved success across the UK and Europe with hits like “We Close Our Eyes” and “Call Me.”
Pretty Woman became the defining romantic comedy of the 1990s, grossing $178 million and pushing “King of Wishful Thinking” to number eight on the Billboard Top 100 chart. Now, more than three decades later, Peter Cox and Richard Drummie continue to tour and perform, keeping the spirit of their breakthrough hit alive.
