A mother in Frankfort, Illinois, Corie Walsh, 40, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder following the tragic death of her 2-year-old son, Barrett. Walsh appeared in court Tuesday, where she was ordered detained despite defense requests to have her committed to a psychiatric facility for treatment.
Authorities say Walsh’s two older children discovered the horrifying scene and ran to a neighbor’s home for help. The neighbor found Barrett hanging and attempted CPR but was unable to save him.
Walsh was later found in the bathroom, reportedly trying to harm herself. A neighbor described her behavior as unusual, noting her dilated eyes and “weird giggle.”
Prosecutors revealed that in the days leading up to the incident, Walsh had been discussing the high-profile Lindsay Clancy trial with friends. Clancy faces charges for the January 2023 strangling deaths of her three children in Massachusetts.
Walsh’s defense team, however, strongly rejects the notion that she was imitating that case. Attorney Robert Kerr called such comparisons “sickening,” emphasizing Walsh’s severe mental illness and grief psychotic disorder diagnosed after the incident.
Messages from Walsh during the trial’s jury deliberations indicated confusion and distress. She wrote to friends expressing fear and concern about the Clancy case, mentioning, “It was manslaughter, please I’m really freaking out.”
Barrett was found deceased just hours later. Walsh also has an eight-month-old infant who was at home during the tragedy but was unharmed.
Reports indicate Walsh told police she believed her son was “the devil” and the “anti-Christ,” a statement her lawyers attribute to her psychotic state. Walsh’s defense highlights the complexity of grief psychotic disorder, a condition involving intense psychological responses to bereavement, including psychotic symptoms.
Andrea Lyon, one of Walsh’s attorneys, described the case as a heartbreaking tragedy for the family, emphasizing the importance of understanding Walsh’s mental health struggles.
This case remains under investigation, and Walsh is being held without bail as legal proceedings continue.
